Round-by-round breakdown of the MLB Home Run Derby
Separate from the regular home run derby, if the All-Star Game itself is tied after nine innings, a second home run derby will be held to determine the winner. It will not be timed, and each manager will pick three players to make three swings each to hit as many home runs as possible. Home Run Derby X gives MLB the opportunity to highlight talent in international markets, providing a platform for local talent to showcase their skills. This Contest and these Official Rules will be governed by the laws of the State of New York. Any court of competent jurisdiction sitting within the State of New York, New York County will be the exclusive jurisdiction and venue for any dispute arising out of or relating to this Contest or these Official Rules. MLBAM's failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.
What else happens at the events?
In 2021, Coors Field sees the ninth-most homers hit (1.2 per game) despite it having the second-longest center field fence in the Bigs. With some of the MLB’s most prolific power hitters participating in the Derby, fans will likely see monster shots over and over again. In Denver, balls should travel about 10% farther than they would at sea level. In the event that the Contest is challenged by any legal or regulatory authority, Sponsor reserves the right to discontinue or modify the Contest, or to disqualify participants residing in the affected geographic areas. In such event, the Released Parties shall have no liability to any participants who are disqualified due to such an action.
In Home Run Derby X there are additional ways to score - Target Hits in the infield, and beyond the fence, can earn extra points for the batters. Each batter also has a Hot Streak – five consecutive pitches where Home Runs and Target Hits count double but a catch in the Hot Streak is also double points for the defense. These Official Rules shall be governed by and construed and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, U.S.A, applicable to contracts entered into and performed exclusively in that State. The Derby returns this year, and aside from Alonso, the remaining seven participants are all first-timers. The event is taking place at Coors Field on Monday, July 12, with the first batter getting started just after 8 p.m. The four teams will compete in a total of four Home Run Derby X games at each event.
The four-minute round length was made permanent in 2016, while the minute of bonus time was reduced to 30 seconds and required two home runs of at least 440 feet (134.1 m). For 2009, State Farm added $5,000 for all non-Gold Ball homers, and $517,000 was collected. For 2010, the non-Gold Ball homer was reduced to $3,000 per home run and a total of $453,000 was collected. Since 2014 any homer hit off a T-Mobile Ball resulted in a $10,000 donation to charity by T-Mobile and MLB, to Team Rubicon. In the early years of the Home Run Derby, 4-10 players from both the AL and NL were selected to participate. Each player was given 2 "innings" to hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 5 outs. For the derby, an out is defined as any swing that is not a home run.
In the bracket format, players go head-to-head against an opponent in the single-elimintation event. Each player will have four minutes per round to hit as many home runs as they can. If the second player in the head-to-head matchup surpasses the total home runs of his opponent before the four minutes are finished, that player automatically advances. MLBAM reserves the right to modify these Official Rules for clarification purposes without materially affecting the terms and conditions of the Contest. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel or suspend the Sweepstakes should virus, bugs, unauthorized human intervention, or other causes corrupt administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper operation of the Sweepstakes . In the event of cancellation, Sponsor may elect to identify the Winner and award the Prize by way of random drawing from among all non-suspect, eligible entries received up to the time of such cancellation.
